In contrast with national chains and most pizza restaurants, Jemma Pizzeria serves personal-sized pies. Another local favorite, Cinque Terra West, welcomed a sister restaurant when owners Marlo and Gianba Vinzoni opened Delizioso Cinque next door in the Gardens at Palisades. Delizioso occupies a space formerly held by Sweet Rose Creamery; these days, instead of sweets, passersby step into Delizioso for its deliciously savory items. The deli serves salads, sandwiches, pizza, and charcuterie boards whose quality stacks up with more fancy establishments (while you’re there, stock up on pantry items like olive oil and balsamic vinegar).

Full disclosure: Gladstones is by no means a new restaurant. It was built in 1972 and was a community fixture for decades, cooking pregame meals for Palisades High School’s football team and providing the community with a consistent source of food, drinks, and camaraderie.

But recent developments cast doubt on the restaurant’s future, reporting that Gladstones would close to make way for a yet-unnamed restaurant by Wolfgang Puck. In 2018, Puck and architect Frank Gehry won the bidding to run a new restaurant on the former premises of Gladstones. The project’s momentum, however, ground to a halt with the recent global pandemic. Gladstones closed in March 2020 — possibly for good. Its longtime employees braced for the worst.

Then Gladstones got a reprieve. It will stay open for at least the next two years, albeit under different management than before the pandemic. Residents have a new chance to enjoy drinks and food with glorious views of sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.
